More painting progress

As I promised, here is the latest progress on my Posidin painting. It’s coming right along but still has a way to go. I’m having fun with it though.

theatre art

I’ve never been happy with sticking to just one area of art. In 1994, I went back to college and found myself involved with the Theatre arts and pursued that course up through a graduate degree. Although illustrating is my first love, I do Theatre Design here and there. Here is an example of some preliminary sketches I did for a design of Shakespeare’s “Midsummer’s Night Dream”. I also included a shot from the actual finished set in performance.

Set Design is fun for me. It incorporates illustration, sculpture, painting along with allowing a collaboration of ideas between many different creative minds. It is draining though, the reason I don’t do it on a regular basis.

Doodling with paint

From time to time I try something different and just start painting without any preconception of an image. It’s sort of doodling with paint. I will start by laying in a background and just add images as I go.  I consider it an exercise in honing compositional skills. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. At any rate, it is my expression in it’s rawest form. This is my latest example.

Here’s a work in progress on my desk now. I had to break from it for paying gigs but now time to go back to it.

I’ve been thinking of painting mermaids for a long time and finally decided to jump in. I’ll keep posting progress shots as I go as an incentive for not procrastinating.

It’s Time

Since this is a blog site, I decided that it was foolish not to actually blog on it. I’m not the blogging type. But, I do have an outlet here to share my art and thoughts so why not use it? So, here I be in all my glory.  I figured this might be a good place to post sketches and doodles, etc… I love seeing other artist’s sketchbooks and since we do art for the purpose of expression, there’s no reason not to share my thought processes along with finished work.

I often find myself doodling on junk-mail and bill envelopes. I don’t know why, just that those small white spaces call out to me. My wife jokes that I will draw on any paper product if it sits around more than 5 minutes. She’s usually right.
